Upscaling Localised Composting: A Cost-Benefit Analysis

by | Jun 11, 2025 | Resources

With landfill space dwindling and methane emissions from organic waste posing serious environmental risks, our Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) analysis shows that small-scale, localised composting continues to offer municipalities a financially and environmentally viable alternative to landfilling.

The CBA builds on earlier findings from a pilot composting project at Durban’s Early Morning Market. The report evaluates an expanded model that combines organic waste from two fresh fruit and vegetable markets in the city of Durban, with municipal garden waste, to be composted at two decentralised sites.

The results make a compelling case for scaling up decentralised composting as a core part of urban waste management strategy. It also shows extensive core benefits linked to food security and transversal partnerships.
